  11. <p>   Climate and clothing: Summer temperatures range from 18 C to
  12. 30 C (65 F-90 F), but humidity is low. Sweaters are recommended
  13. for the cool evenings. By December, the weather is cold with
  14. considerable snowfall.

  16. <p>   Customs: A valid entry visa is required. Check with the
  17. Bulgarian Embassy for specific requirements.
  18. </p>
  19. <p>   Currency: The lev (pl. leva) is the basic unit; the stotinka
  20. (pl. stotinki) is the fractional unit. Leva may not be imported,
  21. exported, or freely converted into Western currencies. Personal
  22. importation and exportation of dollars by Americans are
  23. unrestricted, and no declaration is required.

  25. <p>   Health: Apart from winter smog, affecting those with
  26. respiratory or sinus problems, Sofia causes no special health
  27. problems. Tapwater in the capital is potable. Eating in larger
  28. restaurants is advised.

  30. <p>   Telecommunication: Local and long-distance telephone and
  31. telegraph services are available. Sofia is seven times zones
  32. ahead of eastern standard time.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>   Transportation: There are no direct flights to Bulgaria from
  35. the United States. Connections may be made in Frankfurt, London,
  36. or Vienna with foreign airlines that serve Sofia. Rail
  37. accommodations may be booked from Paris, Frankfurt, or Vienna.
  38. Air or rail service links Sofia with the Black Sea resorts near
  39. Varna and Burgas.

  41. <p>   Sofia has streetcars, trolley-buses, and buses. Taxis are
  42. available at stands or by telephone. Cars may be rented. An
  43. international driving permit is required. Main roads are good.
  44. Snowtires are advisable during October-May.
